Nick Jonas' 'Kingdom' Character is Gay

Nick Jonas – former Disney star and purity enthusiast – has spoken about the revelation of his character’s sexuality in DirecTV series ‘Kingdom’.

It seems there is more of a reason, now, for Jonas’ embracing of the gay community as his character Nate Kulina was finally revealed to be gay in the season finale of Kingdom on December 10. Nick’s character, in the finale episode, is kicked out of a gay club before finding solace with another man.

Nick told Buzzfeed that he had always been aware of his character’s sexuality, from before shooting began as he wanted to know the character as well as possible before playing him:

“Byron [Balasco, Kingdom creator] told me before shooting began. […] Everyone at Kingdom was really transparent about the character and some of the things the character would go through. And in my prep work, I wanted to be aware so I could properly tell this story.”

Jonas, the son of an ordained minister, said that it was important to include his gay fanbase in his career and recognise their support – he hoped his portrayal of this character could support them in return:

“I’ve really been trying to make an effort to talk with my gay fan base and find unique opportunities to set up the next chapter of my life and my career with them in it. […] we’re in a time where there’s a new progression. For all people of all walks of life to accept all people … I’d be thrilled if I’m any part of that.”

The actor also explained that he is willing to portray all aspects of the character – including gay love scenes.

“I have trust in Byron and the writing team to tell these stories in a really honest and grounded way and it’s my responsibility as an actor to be that person and tell those stories the best I can,” he said. “So, absolutely I will do all I need to do.”
