THE OUTMOST FRIDAY FOUR VOL. 03

Conor Behan brings you pop treats for the weekend including the return of Kylie Minogue, James Wolf, Belanger and Lana Del Rey. This is The Outmost Friday Four.

Kylie – Into The Blue

This sprung a leak a little early a couple of weeks ago but the new Kylie tune is now officially here. Into The Blue feels like classic Kylie given enough of a sheen to feel current in 2014, without her resorting to roping in dodgy guest stars. New album Kiss Me Once arrives in March and this certainly is a promising start. She sounds warm and in control and her tale of the ups and downs of a live well lived rings true while also providing excellent dancefloor fodder. Welcome back Kylie!

James Wolf – Heart and Soul

You might remember when Bitches With Wolves were the buzzed about Dublin pop act who’d supported Erasure and Calvin Harris and tipped for big things. Well they’re still here but now James Wolf has renamed himself and honed his pop sound. Lead single Heart and Soul is woozy electro-pop with a hypnotic pull and a striking video that jumbles fashion-mag imagery with trippy colour.

Lana Del Rey – Once Upon A Dream

At this point you’re either on board with the Lana Del Rey experience or you’re not. And if you are then you’ll find lots to enjoy in this cover for Disney’s forthcoming Maleficent. Handpicked by Angelina Jolie, Del Rey weaves the moody gloom-pop spell she used so well on The Great Gatsby’s Young and Beautiful. It’s haunting, strange and utterly Lana. Haters won’t be won over but everyone else can add it to their bulging Lana playlist to pout to.

Belanger – Calico

Music blogger turned electronic producer Belanger has been delivering interesting mixtapes and high profile pop remixes for a while now but is slowly striking out with his own tunes. His first release of this year is the slow burning but addictive groove of Calico. It builds into a sleek rush of Drive-soundtrack worthy synths and 80s menace with a lilting tropical twist that gives it a bittersweet feel. This will burrow into your brain and leave you ready  for more Belanger music in 2014.
