A new Irish indie video game has recently dropped and it’s full of thieving queer raccoons and absurd humour.

Released on March 13, Funi Raccoon Game was created by Irish developer Cí Malone and funded through Kickstarter, where 617 people pledged €18,425 to help bring the project to life. The game lets players explore “whimsical, interconnected worlds” through a tiny raccoon who’s on a mission to steal as much “stuff” as possible to fill their home, a dumpster.

“Home is where the stuff is, but your home is pretty empty,” the official description of the game reads. “Fill up your dumpster with cool, unique stuff. The more stuff you have, the more places you can go! Travel the lands, ‘help’ the locals, and solve puzzles – all in the aim to get more stuff!?!”

Some of the whimsical and surreal worlds players will get to travel in the game include Norwich, The Cliffs of Moher, and the Water Zone. Most of the characters in the game are objects with tiny faces doodled on them.

A review of the game defined Funi Raccoon Game as “both unambiguously queer and Irish coded”. The game features gay, trans and non-binary symbolism, with one example being a poster on a wall that reads “Funi the Raccoon: It Is Gay”.

Commenting on the process of developing the game on Kickstarter, creator Cí Malone shared: “This game has been my life for the past year. I don’t fully understand why it resonated with so many people online—but I’m so glad it did.”

Since the game was laucnhed, messages of support have flooded on Kickstarter and indie video games platform Itch.io, with one fan sharing: “There are no words in any language known to man to describe how much i love this.”

Someone else shared, “The little raccoon was adorable, and the world was weird and full of wild, chaotic events, so I had an amazing time!

“I especially liked the bread creature and the creature that smokes. I thought I had fully completed the demo by collecting all the items, but after looking through the comments, I realized I had only played the surface level of the game. What a shocking discovery!”
