Tell Me Why
This game has some heavy themes, so if you want something lighter, keep reading below! This episodic adventure game contains three chapters. The story follows a pair of twins, Tyler and Alyson, who communicate with telepathy, as they reunite after 10 years to uncover a family secret.
Dream Daddy
Created by the YouTubers GameGrumps, Dream Daddy is a dating simulator where you play as a widowed single dad who moves into a new cul-de-sac. Your character is completely customisable, and there’s even an option to have your character wear a binder! You meet seven dads and develop friendships (and possibly more) with each one.
Butterfly Soup
Butterfly Soup follows a group of four Asian American teenage friends. Set in 2008, the friends deal with their first year of high school and the troubles that follow. Each character has their own set of problems, but they stay together and support each other. Each person in the group is queer in some way and each has their own coming out story.
Life is Strange
Life is Strange was created by the developers at Don’t Nod before the aforementioned Tell Me Why. This queer game is an adventure game spaced out into five episodes. We follow Max Caulfield as she returns to her hometown of Arcadia Bay, where she sees her friend Chloe shot. This event triggers a power in her; she can rewind time, which she uses to save her friend and help her track down Chloe’s missing friend.
The story of this game follows Kasio McHugh, an Irish trans woman, and her destruction of her old diary. The story also follows a space explorer trying to prevent a black hole from destroying Earth; their stories weave together. Set in 1993 on Achill Island, Ireland, we read Kasio’s diary and see how she deals with her family’s rejection and the isolation she feels due to her identity.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a cosy game where you play as an office worker turned farmer after your grandfather passes away and leaves the farm to you. As well as a farming game, it is an adventure and a dating game; your character is customisable, and you can marry whoever is single.
I Was a Teenage Exocolonist
This game is a sci-fi RPG adventure set on a different world, telling the story of settling in a new place and starting afresh. The game goes through your character’s life and the growing pains that come with that. You can use many pronouns and customise almost everything.
A Normal Lost Phone
A puzzle game where you find a lost phone and go through it to find who the owner is. As the player, you look through their messages and photos, getting to know this stranger, until you learn they mysteriously disappeared on their birthday. A Normal Lost Phone explores trans identity through someone else’s eyes.
Hades
This is an action RPG game. We follow Zagreus, son of Hades, as he attempts to escape the Underworld to find his long-lost mother, Persephone. We see him encounter enemies and challenges as he tries to reach Mount Olympus. He meets two people, Megaera and Thanatos, whom he has romantic feelings for; he is a bisexual God!
Life is Strange: True Colours
From the Life is Strange series, this adventure follows Alex Chen, who can manipulate emotions. After being in the foster care system, she reconnects with her brother Gabe. As he shows her around, they fall into a search for a missing person. Alex, who is bisexual, battles with herself over whether to stay or to adventure as a musician.
Night in the Woods
Set in a world of zoomorphic people in Possum Springs, this game follows a cat named Mae. A college dropout, she returns home to find that it has changed. She and her friends investigate the town’s secrets while dealing with personal struggles. This game features LGBTQ+ characters and is known as one of the most iconic queer games.
With so much going on in the world right now, sometimes it feels good to unwind and get out of your head. We hope this list of amazing queer games helps you find that, and find some comfort in seeing your community represented. If you want more recommendations, you can find them here!
