We run down Bowie’s queerest moments.

  1. Bowie comes out as gay

On January 22, 1972, whilst promoting his Ziggy Stardust persona, Bowie came out to a Melody Maker reporter, saying: “I’m gay, and always have been, even when I was David Jones.”

In 1976, with wife Angie very much in the public eye, he told Playboy that he was bisexual. And there was even a rumour that he had met his wife because “they were fucking the same bloke”.

In 1983, Bowie told Rolling Stone magazine that declaring his bisexuality “was the biggest mistake I ever made”. He went on to add that he had always been “a closet heterosexual”.

Legend goes that Angie Bowie caught her husband and Jagger in bed together. When she walked in on them, Bowie reportedly said, “Oh, hello, how are you?”

Quoted in Christopher Anderson’s Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger, Angie was certain they’d been having sex.

It was so obvious, in fact, that I never even considered the possibility that they hadn’t been screwing, she said.
