A British rugby player has been charged with using homophobic abuse against another player, the BBC reports today.

Time out: Paterson could face ban of 8 weeks

Lee Paterson, who plays centre for the Batley Bulldogs, was sent off in the 72nd minute in a game against Leigh Centurions on Sunday and now faces a Grade E charge.

The case will be addressed by the Rugby Football League’s disciplinary panel on Tuesday and the 32 year-old could face a ban of eight matches.

Earlier this season, Leeds Rhinos half-back Zak Hardakr was banned for five games after he called referee James Chid “a fucking fag” .

The 22 year-old year-old later trained with LGBT rugby team the Manchester Canalsiders in an attempt to learn and told that the experience had made him a better person.
