The grassroots trans rights group Transgress the NGS is working in collaboration with the charity Ana Liffey in a new healthcare initiative for Dublin’s trans community. Ana Liffey will provide free access to safe injection supplies and blood tests for trans people in Dublin.

The charity will now be able to offer subcutaneous and intramuscular injecting packs as part of its existing needle exchange service. These supplies can be requested by contacting the charity by phone call, text or WhatsApp, with arrangements then made for collection.

Trans people can also arrange blood testing and safe injecting education through Ana Liffey’s nursing clinic. An appointment for these services can similarly be made by contacting the charity by phone, text or WhatsApp. Transgress the NGS specifies that people who are self-medicating can also access these services.

Starting as a small community-led group in Dublin’s North Inner City, Ana Liffey has developed into one of Ireland’s leading harm reduction organisations offering a range of services to people in need. For over 40 years, it has provided care and worked alongside people affected by drug use, homelessness and social exclusion.

Through its frontline support, healthcare, outreach and advocacy, Ana Liffey offers vital services to people within the community. In 2024, Ana Liffey expanded its work to support people experiencing domestic, gender and sexual-based violence, providing specialist support services.

Transgress the NGS is a grassroots organisation for trans rights, advocating through methods of protests, demonstrations, pickets and open letters to the HSE and the Department of Health. They also compiled a list of GPs in Ireland who provide services to trans people, including prescribing HRT to patients directly.

Earlier this month, the group’s open letter demanding improved trans healthcare in Ireland received more than 2,200 signatures. The letter was directed to Minister for Health, Jennifer Caroll MacNeill and HSE management and outlined demands regarding the National Clinical Programme for Gender Healthcare.

Transgress the NGS commented on the new trans healthcare initiative in collaboration with Ana Liffey, saying: “Many trans people in Ireland struggle to access safe injecting supplies and, even more commonly, to access blood tests via their GP, so we believe this collaboration is a real positive development.

“We welcome any other organisations who would like to work with us, or indeed independently, to set up similar initiatives to fill the many huge gaps in trans healthcare provision.”
