The Captain of Dublin GAA Club St. Vincent’s, referenced the “girlfriends and boyfriends” of the club’s players during his victory speech at the weekend.
Ger Brennan, Captain of the All Ireland club championship winning side, St. Vincent’s, made the incredibly progressive speech following the team’s victory over Mayo’s Castlebar Mitchel’s last Sunday. In his speech, he casually thanked both the girlfriends and boyfriends of the team for all of their support throughout the championship.
In the sporting world, where homosexuality is still very much a taboo subject, and where homophobia is still rampant, this kind of acceptance is hugely needed and welcomed. What makes his speech so important is the ease at which he utters the sentence. No sensationalising, no hesitation – it’s just normal. It would be really fantastic to see more of this in the sporting world. Have a look at the speech below.
