Watch: Gay Dad Discusses Sons' Homophobic Bullying

A gay dad of two sons has made a video discussing how his children have been the victims of homophobic bullying.

Joshua Alameda Franklin, 31, posted a video on Facebook Monday, detailing how his sons Alae’a, 10, and Joshua, 9, have been the victims of physical and mental bullying because of their dad’s sexual orientation.

Franklin, a Hawaii resident, said his sons were called homophobic slurs and that their school didn’t react.

The boys spoke about the bullying and abuse they were subjected to in the video.

“People would ask me about my father, if he was gay, and I would say, ‘Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with that,’” Alae’a said. He then said a student “slammed my face to a pole and gave me a black eye.”

Nine year-old Joshua added that, on a separate occasion, a student “choked my neck and slammed me to the ground.”

In an interview with a local TV station, Franklin said the bullying has gotten so bad that he has taken to homeschooling his sons for fear of their safety and wellbeing. He also claims that school authorities have been ineffective in stopping the abuse.

Franklin said that the school isn’t trying to educate the students about being gay – and that it’s okay to actually be gay – but just tells the children to tolerate gay people.

“The school is telling the perpetrators that are doing this to my children that they need to tolerate us, and they’re using the word tolerance or tolerate in a way where it’s very exclusive,” Franklin said. “So, basically what’s being stated is that they’re not willing to tell the kids that are doing this to my children, ‘Hey, you know what, there’s nothing wrong with being gay.'”
