Lana Del Rey is so many shades of cool, it’s sometimes hard to even comprehend. She doesn’t need to take her clothes off to get the public talking, though she does occasionally tell how she wishes she was dead already, like her idols Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain.
Luckily for us, the real elusive chanteuse is alive and functioning, and has released the music video for the second single from her brand new album, Ultraviolence, which debuted at number one in 80 counties this week, including both the UK and US. Surely that’s an incentive to continue living?
Shades of Cool, shot by Jake Nava in Los Angeles, is unmistakably the work of Lana Del Rey – set in the lush suburbs of Hollywood, Lana finds herself in a romance with a seemingly wealthy older gentleman, who drives her around in his vintage Chevy followed by a trip to his lavish home where she swims in a ruffled swimsuit and dances around his living room in a carefree – if not top-shelf liquor-induced – manner.
Visuals have proven something of a key point to Del Rey’s success – she recently reached 1 billion video views on YouTube. At the end of 2011, her debut singles, a double A-side of Video Games and Blue Jeans, were accompanied by DIY videos made by Lana herself and inspired by the imagery of Old Hollywood. The success of her videos has translated into sales, with over 18 million records sold to date.
