Wexford Library launches Rainbow Reading Club

Wexford Library Service is set to launch a monthly LGBT+ book club, Wexford's Rainbow Reading Club, in Wexford Town Library this September.

Wexford Library lit up at night

Less than a year ago the Wexford Library Services launched a section dedicated to queer issues in Gorey Library which boasts the largest collection of LGBT+ titles in any library in Ireland, now they are back with another amazing show of support for the community.

Wexford’s Rainbow Reading Club, an LGBT+ book club, is set to launch in Wexford Town Library next month with the first meeting being held on September 14 from 4.00pm – 5.15pm. The Wexford Library Services recognise the need for services and supports for the LGBT+ community, outside of the Dublin region, and were thrilled when they were approached by the club’s founder John Cunningham-Ryan and asked to host the monthly meeting.

John spoke of his love for books which was ingrained in him from a young age by his mother who, now retired, was a primary school teacher for 40 years. He fondly recalls those early memories, stating; “Growing up our house was always full of books and I just ate everything I could get my hands on, I was reading adult books – particularly science fiction, fantasy and Stephen King – since the age of 11 and my own house is now full of books.”

He continues to read fervidly to this day, going on to say; “I read 2-3 books at once but I do have a 50 page rule. If it doesn’t grab me within 50 pages I put it away and start the next, there are enough awesome books out there to not have to read what you don’t like.” He goes on to say that his current favourite book is Becki Albertalli’s Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda which hit movie screens last year titled Love, Simon.

The club which is launching next month is for adults to read and discuss LGBT+ books, and maybe even watch a movie. The first meeting to be held on September 14 promises to provide a fun and inclusive environment as well as tea, coffee and buns!

Further details about the event can be found through Wexford Library’s Facebook page or by directly contacting John by email at [email protected] or by phone at 086 395 3846.

Support GCN

GCN has been a vital, free-of-charge information service for Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community since 1988.

During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.

GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
