The São Paulo Dance Company is making its highly-anticipated Irish debut this spring at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, and GCN has a pair of tickets and a dinner at La Rocha to give to a lucky reader!

Brazil’s finest dance company will make its Ireland premiere with shows in Dublin on Monday, February 5, and Tuesday, February 6, at 7:30pm. To celebrate, we’re giving you the opportunity to see these spectacular performances and enjoy a complimentary dinner for two at La Rocha, one of Dublin’s finest Brazilian BBQ restaurants.

The dance company presents a thrilling lineup of three bold contemporary works with a rich and varied programme from three choreographers rooted in Latin American or Spanish culture.

First, the epic and emotionally charged Anthem reflects on life cycles and collective identities and uses gorgeous dramatic lighting to accompany an ensemble of 14 dancers. Inspired by songs that become anthems for a generation, Anthem was created in 2019 by Spain’s resident choreographer Goyo Montero and Cuba’s Acosta Danza.

Next, the sensually harmonious Gnawa draws on the Mediterranean colours and flavours of Valencia and features dance powered by the hypnotic, ritualistic music of North Africa. Gnawa was created by Nacho Duato in 2005 and restaged for the São Paulo Dance Company in 2009.

The exhilarating finale, Agora, mixes drums and Afro-Brazilian percussion with rock music and vocals. Created in 2019 by Brazilian dancer Abranches, Agora’s choreographer Cassi Abranches uses flirtatious dance to explore time and rhythm and sculpts the movement of each dancer’s body to the percussive beats and bass grooves of Sebastian Piracés’ score.

The São Paulo Dance Company is at the forefront of the South American contemporary dance scene. The company’s virtuoso dancers pair a ferocious contemporary technique with the rhythmic physicality of Latin American dance.

Tickets to see São Paulo Dance Company’s Irish premiere are available now from €26.50, but for a chance to win a pair of tickets plus a dinner for two at La Rocha, answer the following question:

Is the São Paulo Dance Company from Brazil or Berlin?

The competition closes at midnight on Friday, February 2, 2024. Winners will be contacted directly and shared on social media.
