Throngs Of LGBT Supporters Celebrate Yes Anniversary One Year On

Crowds celebrate the Yes anniversary vote in the same-sex marriage referendum at Dublin Castle with a giant Yes cake

LGBT rights activists, Yes campaigners and politicians came out in their droves to commemorate the marriage referendum Yes anniversary

This weekend people all across Ireland celebrated the anniversary of the Yes vote in last year’s same-sex marriage referendum, with Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald, TD Joan Burton and Senator Ivana Bacik turning up at Dublin Castle yesterday to show their share in the celebrations.

Hundreds gathered around a decadent Yes Equality cake on Sunday 22nd of May to celebrate the anniversary of the marriage referendum.

Minister Katherine Zappone was also in attendance at Dublin Castle where last year she and her partner Ann Louise Gilligan awaited the results of the same-sex marriage referendum during the count.

“As ann Louise and I cam walking into Dublin Castle it all came flooding back. There were so many people just flowing in, so all of that joyful feeling was with us,” Zappone was reported as saying by the Irish Times.

“We had a renewal of our vows in January and it was everything that we had hoped for to have our family and friends in City Hall in front of us as we declared our forever love to each other.”

The nine layer Yes cake made by The Cupcake Bloke made its way to Pantibar, where Panti posed for pictures.

Since the legalisation of same-sex marriage last year there have been over four hundred same-sex marriages carried out in Ireland, with those numbers set to rise as the LGBT community becomes more accustomed to the institution that many had resigned themselves to being excluded from.

However, with acceptance of LGBT members of the Irish community at an all time high, we cannot get complacent says Rob Buchanan.

According to Rob, the LGBT community have become complacent in our search for equality. “It’s time to come out of post-referendum retirement and take up arms again,” he proclaims, urging people to once again take up political arms after the relishing in the joy of the Yes anniversary has subsided.
