Sport Ireland and Sporting Pride have teamed up again to launch the 2022 version of the #LetsGetVisible campaign. The initiative kicked off as a part of Dublin Pride Health and Wellbeing Week, and aims to acknowledge the importance of LGBTQ+ representation within the sports sector where queer visibility has not always been prominent.

During the entire month of June, a professional photographer from Sporting Pride is visiting Irish LGBTQ+ sports clubs to capture athletes interested in taking part in the campaign. There is also an option to get involved by sharing your own images on social media using #LetsGetVisible, and you can also update your profile picture and cover photo with specially made campaign banners.

Sport Ireland is making a conscious effort to increase LGBTQ+ participation in line with its recently published Diversity and Inclusion Policy. Dr Úna May, Chief Executive of the organisation, welcomed the launch of the #LetsGetVisible campaign saying: “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Sporting Pride.”

She continued: “Campaigns such as this are an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to building a diverse, inclusive and welcoming sport sector. I would like to wish Sport Ireland’s LGBTI+ staff members, athletes, participants and sport enthusiasts a Happy Pride.”

Director of Anti-Doping & Ethics at Sport Ireland, Siobhán Leonard added: “Improving visibility and outward expressions of inclusion are objectives of the Sport Ireland policy on Diversity and Inclusion in Sport. The #LetsGetVisible campaign gives all those involved in the sport sector the opportunity to show our support for the LGBTI+ community. I encourage everyone to get involved.”

Sporting Pride’s Alicia McConnell commented: “Sporting Pride is thrilled with Sport Ireland’s support of the 2022 Let’s Get Visible Campaign. It is a fun and engaging way to show your organisation’s support of the LGBTQ+ community.

“Thank you to the 30 NGBs (National Governing Bodies), 10 LSPs (Local Sports Partnerships) and 34 Sport Club Allies who participated last year and we strive to increase the collaboration this year.”

During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.

GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
