Jeremy Allen White is set to star in and executive produce a bisexual romance series, adapted from André Aciman’s novel Enigma Variations. The project is currently in development and will mark the second screen adaptation of Aciman’s work, following the critically acclaimed film Call Me by Your Name. That adaptation, featuring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer and directed by Luca Guadagnino, received four Academy Award nominations, with James Ivory taking home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In Enigma Variations, White will portray the lead character, Paul. The official synopsis of the novel describes Paul as a young bisexual man whose “loves remain as consuming and covetous throughout adulthood as they were in adolescence… ungraspable, transient and forever underwritten by raw desire—not for just one person’s body but, inevitably, for someone else’s as well.”

Aciman, an accomplished academic and literary figure, holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. He has had teaching positions at Princeton and Bard and is currently the Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature at The City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Centre, where he also chairs the PhD programme and directs The Writers’ Institute.

Jeremy Allen White has gained significant recognition for his role as Carmy Berzatto in the acclaimed FX series The Bear, earning him two Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes. The series’ fourth season is currently in progress.

White is also widely known for his portrayal of Philip ‘Lip’ Gallagher in Showtime’s long-running series Shameless, which spanned 11 seasons. On the big screen, White has appeared in The Iron Claw.

Amanda Kate Shuman, known for her work on The Wheel of Time (2021), Berlin Station (2016), and The Blacklist (2013), is rumoured to be involved as a writer.

The Netflix adaptation of Enigma Variations adds yet another highly anticipated project to White’s career, further showcasing his growing prominence in both television and film.
