The new trailer for the highly-anticipated film On Swift Horses just dropped, giving us a glimpse of Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones as they navigate secret queer affairs.

Based on Shannon Pufahl’s award-winning novel of the same name, On Swift Horses follows newlywed Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and her charismatic brother-in-law Julius (Elordi) as they embark on parallel journeys of risk, romance and self-discovery.

The film is set in the 1950s, when Muriel has just left her Kansas home to start a new life in San Diego alongside her husband Lee (Will Poulter). Their fresh start is somewhat interrupted by the arrival of Julius, who returns from the Korean War without any long-term plans.

A keen card player, Julius ends up in Las Vegas, where he does pit surveillance at a casino. There, he meets Henry (Diego Calva), with whom he sparks a passionate affair.

Throughout the story, he keeps in contact with Muriel, who is more similar to her brother-in-law than either realised. She also takes an interest in gambling by betting on racehorses and meets the charismatic blonde Sandra (Sasha Calle).

The two quickly grow closer, as shown in their interactions featured in the new trailer for On Swift Horses. “You’re new at this, aren’t you?” Sandra asks Muriel. “It’s all luck. We’re all just a hair’s breadth from losing everything.”

After that, a quick celebratory peck and a subtle touch at a bar provide some hints as to where the relationship between the two women is headed. The pair shares another scene in front of a fireplace, when Muriel says: “You’re really not afraid of being alone.” Sandra responds, “Neither are you,” before kissing her passionately.

In a parallel secret love affair, Elordi’s Julius is seen walking across a snowy field, with his voiceover saying: “See, the thing about poker is everybody’s got an angle.”

Elsewhere in the trailer, Julius meets Henry and the pair embark on a steamy romance of their own, starting with lustful glances and culminating in debauched and sweaty hookups.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Diego Calva gave some insight into the explicit sex scenes he shares with Elordi, saying they had “a week of intensive (prep) in the motel room.”

“(Director) Dan (Minahan) gave us a lot of freedom to run around and to play and to find that love within those four walls,” Calva added.

Daisy Edgar-Jones said the film is “wonderfully queer”, explaining that: “Dan was really helpful in guiding that and making sure that we were also being authentic to that period and that experience.”

On Swift Horses is set to be released in cinemas in the US on April 25, and is yet to receive a release date in the UK and Ireland. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.
