The promising gay rom-com A Nice Indian Boy has finally dropped its first trailer. Based on Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name, the Bollywood film will star Tony award-winning actor Jonathan Groff and Deadpool’s Karan Soni.

The film follows Doctor Naveen (Soni), who brings his boyfriend Jay (Groff) home to meet his conservative family in India. But this introduction is not just a casual occasion, the narrative follows the planning of the Indian wedding of their dreams.

The family and the couple are faced with a lot of struggles and misunderstandings. Although Navee’s parents knew that their son was gay, they weren’t expecting him to bring home a white guy. They’re reluctant to accept it even though Jay was adopted and raised by Indian parents.

With plenty of singing and dancing, A Nice Indian Boy is filled with laughter and entertainment. It premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and screened at the BFI London Film Festival in 2024, receiving praise from critics for its humour and its invigorating representation of the LGBTQ+ community in India.

For director Roshan Sethi, who is also Soni’s partner, the film is deeply personal. In an interview with Sky News, he talked about his experience of coming out to his family: “I really was, until those six years ago, planning to just ride this out and pretend to be straight and marry someone and to have kids.”

As for Soni, he confessed to the news outlet how it all feels “very overwhelming” because he never thought playing a starring role in a film was a possibility for him, and remarked on the importance of representation on the big and small screen.

Groff also had lots of work to do to immerse himself in the Indian culture, which he was largely unfamiliar with. “I had never seen a Bollywood movie. I didn’t know anything about this culture in general,” he said to Variety.

The movie releases in US cinemas on April 4, while a release date for Ireland and the UK is yet to be announced. In the meantime, get a sneak peek of A Nice Indian Boy with the trailer below:
