It’s official: Heartstopper is coming to a close. While we’re not quite ready to say goodbye, we couldn’t be more excited for the final instalment. Although there won’t be a Season 4, the beloved queer show is set to wrap with a feature film based on the upcoming sixth volume of Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper graphic novel series.

Netflix confirmed the news on social media on Tuesday, April 22 – three years to the day since Season 1 was released. The streaming giant wrote that the show will return “bigger than ever” with a film marking its “final chapter”.

The post was accompanied by a photo of main characters Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, with the words “Who fancies a movie then?” around them. The couple will of course be a central point to the story, as they have been for the previous three seasons, with actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke also serving as executive producers.

The film will pick up after the events of the Season 3 finale, which saw many of the characters take their relationships to new levels. It will explore the weight of a long-distance relationship, as Nick and Charlie face their biggest challenge yet. With the former preparing to leave for university and the latter finding new independence at school, the movie asks the question, “Can first loves really last?”

Meanwhile, many of the couple’s close circle are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet reality of growing up and moving on.

“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” writer and executive producer Alice Oseman said.

“I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”

The Heartstopper film will be directed by Wash Westmoreland and is expected to begin production in the summer.
