Bridgerton star Luke Newton has been cast to play Lee Alexander McQueen, an iconic gay fashion designer, in an off-Broadway production titled House of McQueen.
The play follows the life of the out designer. On the official page for the production, it says, “House of McQueen is a new Off-Broadway play about the life and work of iconic fashion designer Alexander McQueen as told from his own revolutionary, daring and elegant perspective. It is the story of a boy born in the east end of London, who literally wears his heart on his sleeve, never meant to rise beyond his working-class family.
“From making doll clothes for his mother’s friends to working in a tailor shop, he rises to the top of the fashion industry as chief designer for Givenchy and head of his own legendary fashion line, as his fashion shows become theatrical and artistic spectacles, attracting countless celebrities.
“Seeking to find beauty in the most devastating aspects of life, McQueen envisions and creates clothes to empower women in response to what is happening in his life and the world around him. Fighting against the commercial interests of legendary houses like Givenchy and Gucci to remain provocative, he challenges norms and pushes boundaries as an artist. In the end, the fight consumes him.”

As described in the play synopsis, the late designer gained recognition from working as the chief designer for Givenchy and starting his own label and brand. He even won the British Designer of the Year award in 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003, along with winning the Council of Fashion Designers’ International Designer of the Year award also in 2003.
The play was written by Darrah Cloud, with Sam Helfrich as director, Rick Lazes as executive producer, and McQueen’s nephew, Gary James McQueen, as creative director.
While primarily known for portraying Colin Bridgerton in the Netflix hit series Bridgerton, having starred in season three alongside Nicola Coughlan, House of McQueen will not be Luke Newton’s first time on the professional stage. He was an understudy for The Book of Mormon on the West End, the musical Legally Blonde, and The Shape of Things.
House of McQueen will be performed at The Mansion at Hudson Yards in New York City, with previews beginning in August and the show officially opening on September 9, 2025.
