Ncuti Gatwa and Cynthia Erivo to star in upcoming musical movie Bad Fairies

The musical is a fantastical adventure film “that follows a delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they shake up their magical world”.

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa is joining the multi-talented Cynthia Erivo in the new animated musical film Bad Fairies.

Between acclaimed plays and prominent roles in extremely successful films and TV shows, Gatwa and Erivo have made a name for themselves in showbiz. After rising to fame with his role as beloved queer character Eric in Netflix hit show Sex Education, Ncuti Gatwa rapidly climbed the success ladder by portraying the 15th Time-Lord in legendary TV series Doctor Who.

A three-time Academy Award–nominated and Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award–winning actor, Cynthia Erivo stole queer hearts all over the world with her performance as Elphaba in the Wicked movie.

According to Deadline, the two stars are now set to join forces in the upcoming animated musical Bad Fairies. The musical is a fantastical adventure film “that follows a delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they shake up their magical world”.

Written by Deborah Frances-White and directed by Megan Nicole Dong with co-director Oliver Staphylas, the film is due for release in summer 2027. While details are scarce about Gatwa’s role, Erivo’s character has been confirmed as Jayne Staplegun, described as a “trailblazing fairy whose defiant streak sparks a rebellion”.

Joining the two stars in this project, Tony Award-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the creative masterminds behind the acclaimed musical Six, will be in charge of the music. Isabella Summers, of Florence & the Machine fame, will be composing the score.

Also involved is Ian Eisendrath, the Grammy-nominated producer and composer behind KPop Demon Hunters, who will take on the role of executive music producer for Bad Fairies.

The film is set for release on May 21, 2027. In the meantime, queer fans will be treated to another incredible performance by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba in the upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, out in cinemas on November 21.
