This August, Accidental Theatre in Belfast will be hosting a fabulous one-day festival featuring local artists who identify as FLINTA. Called ‘Taking Up Space’ FLINTA Forward Festival, the event aims to celebrate and showcase underrepresented voices from in and around the Northern Irish capital.

FLINTA is a German acronym that represents women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people with the aim of creating community and spaces for people to exist outside of patriarchal structures. Accidental Theatre is looking to create this space and uplift voices in this community through this all-day festival.

The festival will feature 11 voices from the FLINTA community, culminating with a DJ set from queer Belfast artist DJ Popper Cherry.

For those who purchase the all-day pass, the lineup will open at 2pm with poetry from Beckie Stew, Lee Harrison and Alex Cregan. For those who can only make it to the evening portion of the festival, a 6pm evening pass will be available. Kicking it off for the late starters will be Irish comedian Sara Jade Davison.

The full lineup also includes Ceili Rae Minogue, Hester Ectomy, Final Thirteen, Ciara Sands, Garrett Laurie, Anthony Layde, Liz Byrne, Neave Wright, Lauren Martin and Kaya Gleeson.

The 12 performers will take to the stage on August 8. During this time, Belfast will also be hosting the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the largest celebration of Irish music and culture in the world, from August 2 to 9.

The FLINTA Festival will allow tourists and locals to see and hear voices from the FLINTA community that might be typically underrepresented in festivals such as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

If attendance in person isn’t an option, Accidental Theatre will be live-streaming the all-day event from the broadcast channel on their website.

Accidental Theatre is an independent arts venue and organisation aiming to support artists and members of the community from disadvantaged backgrounds and minority groups in and around Belfast and Northern Ireland. In addition to frequent shows and productions, they offer classes in various art forms and meeting spaces for community organisations. Find out more here.
