La Bola Negra is the latest creation from Spanish duo Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, winning them the Best Director Award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The movie, also known as The Black Ball, is already being hailed as one of the best European films of the year.
Described as an “emotionally charged story of love, memory and inheritance spanning three generations” La Bola Negra is inspired by the unfinished final work of poet Federico García Lorca and the acclaimed play by one of Spain’s foremost contemporary playwrights, Alberto Conejero. It aims to blend history, poetry and passionate romance, tracing the journeys of three men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and love, across 1932, 1937 and 2017.
With this work, the filmmakers hope to honour the memory and lives of queer people whose voices were forced into silence and their determination to be heard.
“When we began writing La Bola Negra, we wanted to tell a story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility,” Calvo and Ambrossi told Tudum. “Above all, we wanted to honor the generations of people whose courage and sacrifice made our freedoms possible today.”
The epic also features a strong cast to back up its premise, including special appearances by Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz and eight-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close. They are joined by Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas, Carlos González and Milo Quifes, while acclaimed musician Guitarricadelafuente also makes his acting debut.
The 155-minute runtime of La Bola Negra promises another incredible creation from the Spanish Drag Race judges Calvo and Ambrossi. Despite the pair ending their romantic relationship recently, they have stated they will be continuing to work together on projects into the future.
While the movie was shown on May 21 for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, it won’t be screened in Irish and UK markets until November 6 and will reach global streaming platforms on December 4. Currently, the film stands at a rating of 88% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Check out the trailer below!
