Halloween is known as one of the biggest holidays in queer culture, but what is the Gay Halloween trend? Think of the most niche costume possible, something perhaps only one out of five partygoers will get; an obscure reference from a beloved queer film, meme, or any other pop culture touchstone. Gay Halloween has no rules. Jumping between ultra-high-concept and minimal effort, these costumes will always showcase humour and artistic design.

This year’s spooky season has already given us some great contenders, so now, as your timeline fills with the famous meme, “I hate Gay Halloween, what do you mean you’re…” let’s take a look at some of the best examples of this trend.

What is the appeal of the ‘I hate Gay Halloween’ trend? Maybe the joy comes from explaining the costume and getting that visceral “oh” reaction from people. Or maybe it’s about picking something specific; when someone sees it, there’s an automatic kinship, a shared sense of humour, the sense of ‘if you know, you know’.

But in the end, sometimes the most obscure reference is simply the funniest one.
