Chucky creator hits back at Nicki Minaj for suggesting horror icon would vote Republican

Child’s Play and Chucky creator Don Mancini took to X and Instagram to publicly call out musician Nicki Minaj, now a MAGA supporter, for posting an AI image of the beloved character voting Republican.

Don Mancini, creator of the horror icon Chucky, called out musician and MAGA supporter Nicki Minaj for using an AI-generated image suggesting the beloved doll would vote Republican. In response, Mancini shared a picture of a Chucky doll with an “I voted” pin attached, accompanied by a caption stating the character would fundamentally disagree with everything MAGA stands for.

Minaj originally uploaded her post on November 3 to remind her followers to vote in the midterm elections. The AI-generated image featured the killer doll in a pink suit, wearing a “Vote Red” pin.

However, a day later, on November 4, Mancini responded with a post saying: “Chucky has a trans kid. Chucky protects the dolls. Chucky is anti-ICE. Chucky says, ‘A BLUE WAVE is coming, as BLUE as my f*ckin’ eyes!'”

The rapper has been a longtime fan of the franchise, referencing the doll in her verse on Kanye West’s song ‘Monster’ and previously dressing up as a character from the series for Halloween. The musician recently attended a Trump rally on October 25 and has openly criticised the trans community.

Despite Mancini’s post being celebrated by many, the Chucky creator didn’t stop there. After what has been described as a ‘blue tsunami’, with the Democratic Party securing significant victories across the United States, the filmmaker returned to social media to reshare his original image. This time, however, Chucky’s hair had been turned blue, accompanied by the caption: “Too bad, Nicki! No AI, by the way! #bluewave.”

Originally appearing in the Child’s Play franchise, Chucky eventually moved to the centre of the series, with the film titles evolving to focus on the character, including Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky. Through these entries, openly gay Mancini introduced more queer sensibilities into the evil doll’s story.

Queer icon Jennifer Tilly was introduced as the long-running character Tiffany Valentine in Bride of Chucky, while Seed of Chucky saw the first appearance of gender-fluid characters Glen and Glenda, the child of Chucky and Tiffany. Although their depiction can be seen as problematic, it was a bold step for a mainstream horror film released in 2004. As the story progressed, Mancini was given further opportunities to push representation, most notably in the Syfy television series Chucky.

The show features several LGBTQ+ characters, including protagonist Jake, who struggles with and comes to terms with his sexuality in the first season. Others include Devon, Jake’s crush-turned-boyfriend, and the return of twins Glen and Glenda, this time played by non-binary actor Lachlan Watson in a dual role.

Mancini has long used the Chucky character to champion and represent LGBTQ+ identities throughout the franchise. His recent post reminds us that the horror icon was created by, and continues to be embraced by, members of the queer community.
