Jem and the Holograms – the cartoon rock stars of your dreams – are making a triumphant return and this time it’s all going to be a little bit more gay.
Jem and the Holograms aired 29 years ago, with a popular television show and a torrent of merchandise, making us all dream to be in a psychedelic hair band.
Set to return next month with Jem and the Holograms #1, comics publisher IDW is set to kick off a new era for the girl group with a new ongoing series.
But, it gets even better – band members Kimber and Stormer are set to fly out of the closet in a way only these wondrous characters can.
New Jem and the Holograms writer Kelly Thompson and artist Ross Campbell told The Advocate all about the updated look, along with Stormer and Kimber’s newly revealed sexualities. They have also promised to bring back fan favourites Synergy, Danse, Clash and the Stingers.
With a massive gay fanbase, Thompson and Campbell hope to diversify the characters in both race and sexuality.
“Kimber and Stormer are gay and we’re discussing a few others. Beyond those I’m really hoping to see some more queer characters. It just really needs to happen. I’d love to have some gay Holograms or Misfits fans in the story. That would be awesome. Maybe they could be on the Holograms’ street team,” Campbell said.
“We’re going to be exploring a romantic relationship between the two [Kimber and Stormer] characters,” Thompson revealed.
“I wanted to see some diversity, and definitely some drums, from The Misfits right out of the gate. Adding Jetta to the original lineup solved both those problems rather elegantly.”
This venture comes off the back of the announcement of a Jem and the Holograms movie, set to be released in October of this year.
