The Late David Turpin has been hard at work putting together his new show as a part of Tiger Dublin Fringe. Here are 7 things you need to know about ‘Romances’.

• Romances is The Late David Turpin’s first full concert in two years, and his first show at Project Arts Centre in three years.

In this one-off show for Tiger Dublin Fringe, David will be performing a new set of songs about love, sex and romance, with an eclectic cast of guest performers.

• Guests will be sharing the stage with David

Irish drag legend Veda Beaux Reves; contemporary classical choir Tonnta; vocalists Bear Worship, Samyel, Elephant and Martin McCann; singer-songwriter Gar Cox; jazz performer Jaime Nanci; electronic musicians Hunter-Gatherer and Benny Smiles; and a special surprise artist.

• The music of Romances is inspired by the sound and feel of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Think Bronski Beat, Boy George, Betty Blue and The Crying Game. To prepare for the show, some of the cast made a pilgrimage to The Little Museum of Dublin, where the dress worn by Jaye Davidson in The Crying Game is currently on display as part of an exhibition of film costume.

• Romances coincides with the 21st anniversary of the Dublin Fringe Festival, and with the 21st anniversary of the death of queer filmmaker and activist Derek Jarman.

Derek Jarman’s films – including The Angelic Conversation, The Last of England and Edward II – have been a major influence on David’s new songs. A short extract from Jarman’s final film, Blue, is included in the show as tribute.

• The poster for Romances – which shows two men embracing from the shoulders up – was banned from Facebook advertising for being “sexually suggestive”.

Facebook ignored requests for further information, including an enquiry as to whether the image would have been acceptable had it depicted a heterosexual couple.

• Romances is the first show in the history of the Dublin Fringe Festival to be advertised with a line of bespoke condoms.

The Romances Fringe condom is available for free from Outhouse LGBT Community Resource Centre, from the Tiger Dublin Fringe box office on Ormond Quay, and from the Project Arts Centre box office.

• Romances will be performed only once – at 9pm on Thursday September 17, at Project Arts Centre.
