Almost half of Jamaicans say they would evict their child for being gay, a new survey has revealed.
The survey, commissioned by J-FLAG (Jamaican Forum of Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays), polled the opinions of employers, politicians and the general public, between June and July, reports the Jamaica Gleamer.
Of the 942 people surveyed, 47% revealed that they wouldn’t allow their child to continue living at home if they came out as gay. Thirty-six percent (36%) said they would allow their child to continue living at home, while 17% of Jamaicans said they didn’t care either way.
Seventy-five percent (75%) of the general public surveyed said they would feel uncomfortable living with a gay person.
The survey involved a sample group of 1,003 comprising 33 politicians, 28 employers and 942 people from the general populace.
In 2014, a Kingston judge permitted LGBT youths who had been evitcted by their parents after coming out to legally reside in the city’s sewers. The ruling followed months of evictions and harrassment from police, who claimed that the youths’ encampments attracted crime.
