Spanish film Bear Cub (Cachorro) will be screened as the final film for Dublin Film Qlub Season Six

Dublin Film Qlub’s sixth season is drawing to a close and the final film to be screened is Bear Cub, on Saturday 16 July.

Directed by Miguel Albaladego, Bear Cub (or Cachorro to give the film it’s Spanish title) is a comedy about a young boy who ends up under the care of his ‘bear’ uncle, and, by extension, of his uncle’s self-made family of ‘bear’ friends. Bear Cub stars José Luis García Pérez and David Castillo.

Film Qlub explain that “using a traditional story-telling device, as this visiting stranger begins to learn the ways of the tribe, so does the audience slowly gain an understanding of the wild and wonderful ways in which LGBTQ people continue to invent new ways of living.”

The movie allows space for critical thinking on family, both the family that we are born into and the family of friends that we surround ourselves with.

“We love our queer functioning families, because together we can be more ourselves,” Film Qlub concludes.

The film has been well received with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 77%, and the Film Journal International‘s review was positive:

“Alejandro fully captures the picaresque, joyously free gay life centered in Madrid’s La Chueca quarter, and the deep price libertine Pedro pays when he must give it up for his nephew’s sake.

“The film is, of course, not all sex, and, indeed, brims with observant intelligence.”

Bear Cub will be screened at 2:30pm (doors open at 2pm) on Saturday 16 July 2016 in The New Theatre, 43 East Essex Street (entrance through Connolly Books), Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

Tickets are available in the venue for €8, and refreshments which include tea and coffee will be available for free in the venue.
