'Thor: Ragnarok' Could Be Featuring The First LGBT Character In Marvel Films

As if Thor's new haircut wasn't enough, we now have another reason to be excited for the latest Marvel movie.

There has been a lot of talk about the third movie in the Thor saga coming out at the end of October.

Aside from Thor’s new haircut (hello!), the 80s feel of the trailer, the stellar cast – including Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, debuting in the Marvel Universe – ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ might be giving fans the first openly gay character in Marvel movies.

Set four years after the events of ‘The Dark World’, and two years after ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ sees our favourite Asgardian held captive on the planet Sakaar without his mighty hammer Mjolnir.

There he will be forced to battle his long-time friend the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) gladiator-style, in order to return to Asgard and stop the goddess of death Hela (Cate Blanchett) and the imminent Ragnarok, the doom of the Asgardian civilisation.

The movie plot is based on elements from the ‘Planet Hulk’ storyline, which ran through ‘Incredible Hulk’ comic series in the mid 2000s.

In the comic, Hulk joins an alliance of intergalactic warriors called Warbound and in issue 619 it’s revealed that two members of Warbound, one-armed Hiroim and stone-covered Korg, are a couple.

It’s unclear how much of the original comic storyline will be adapted to the movie, but the new trailer, released last July, confirmed that Korg will be in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe instalment.

More recently Taika Waititi, director of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, has also confirmed Korg will definitely be in the movie.

“We wanted to change the idea of what a hulking guy made of rocks could be. He’s huge and heavy, but with a light soul,” Waititi said. “We wanted to make him funny and a relatable entry point into this world. And Thor needs friends.”

Waititi himself will be playing The-Thing-lookalike Korg via a motion-capture performance.

Jessica Jones and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D have both featured LGBT characters in the past, but Korg would be the first openly gay character in the MCU.

We still don’t know whether Korg’s sexuality will be mentioned in the movie.

Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, had previously hinted that we might not be seeing an openly LGBT character in a Marvel film for many years but this feels like a great chance to at least nod towards an openly gay character and many fans are hoping they won’t be disappointed.

Thor star Chris Hemsworth has also recently showed his support for same-sex marriage, taking to his social media to encourage people to vote ‘Yes’ saying marriage ‘should be available to everyone’.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ will hit Irish cinema screens from October 27th, 2017.
