Top 7 Mainstream TV Series With LGBT+ Characters In 2017

Mainstream TV could do with more LGBT+ characters, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great shows out there already.

2017 was a pretty good year for LGBT+ representation on the small screen, with many mainstream TV series introducing some pretty great characters.

Here are our favourite!

Broad City

Ilana from Broad City, a mainstream TV show, skips down the street.

This iconic queen was one of the best characters on mainstream TV last year.

She’s not afraid to speak her mind and has complete confidence in herself.

I think we can all say that we either want to be her or sleep with her, a classic dilemma.

The Walking Dead

Paul

Paul “Jesus” Monroe is extremely tactical and a highly skilled combatant, being able to defeat his opponents with his hands and feed while completely unarmed.

He is also a skilled escape artist as well as a competent tracker.

Not to mention completely and utterly gorgeous.

Game of Thrones

Oberyn Martell from Game of Thrones, mainstream TV show.

Game of Thrones has lots of hot queer moments, but we think that Oberyn Martell is pretty damn sexy.

Nicknamed the Red Viper, this Prince of Dorne doesn’t overthink anything, especially desire.

He followed his emotions in a way that seems so incredibly freeing.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Titus walks down the street in the mainstream TV show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Raised by five aunts in rural Mississippi, Titus Andromedon moves to New York City to become an aspiring Broadway performer.

Whether it’s awkwardly singing “I’ll Make Love To You” at a random man’s funeral or making a music video titled “Peeno Noir,” Titus has stolen our hearts.

Orphan Black

Cosima from Orphan Black, mainstream TV show.

Cosima is insanely smart and incredibly tough, but best of all her sexuality is not the most interesting part of her character or the centre of her storyline.

Orphan Black is doing a great job of portraying LGBT+ characters without playing into dumb stereotypes.

How To Get Away With Murder

Annalise Keating from How To Get Away With Murder, a mainstream TV show.

Annalise is one of the bi characters of mainstream TV who is constantly inspiring us to be our best selves.

Though she’s had a tough time lately in the show, she’ll still never let anyone tell her who to be.

Sense8

Nomi Marks on a motorcycle behind her girlfriend at a Pride parade, as seen on mainstream TV show Sense8.

Nomi has been through a lot but she’s turned the pain of her past into fuel that drives her desire to be the best.

Even though she used to be surrounded by people who were hell-bent on preventing her from being herself, she never gave in to them.

Adventure Time (Honorable Mention)

Marceline and Princess Bubblegum of Adventure Time, mainstream TV show.

Even though Marceline is the Vampire Queen, she’s a really good person deep down and reminds us all that it’s ok to make mistakes.

Plus Marceline and Princess Bubblegum are complete and utter relationship goals, too.
