In all the round-ups and listicles of what’s cinematically queer in 2018, most seem to have missed Duck Butter, starring Arrested Development‘s Alia Shawkat and Spanish actress Laia Costa.

The film takes place over a 24 hour period, beginning with the two women meeting at a concert, and then making a pact to stay together for 24 hours, having sex every hour. However, this conscious attempt to accelerate intimacy yields unexpected results.

Indie-darling Shawkat, who shares a writing credit with the director, Miguel Arteta, spoke about the writing of the film, saying that Duck Butter was originally written for a male and female lead but was changed due to casting difficulties: “I love that it was written for a man and a woman, but we couldn’t find the right guy, so now it happens to star two women.”

In a 2017 interview with Out magazine, Shawkat came out as bisexual, and Duck Butter shows that the actress, producer and now writer, is becoming more comfortable bringing her own voice to her work.

“I used to be less outspoken. But as a woman, an Arab-American, and a member of the LGBTQ community, I have to use whatever voice I have. There’s no more delicacy in being quiet.”
