Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara have announced that they will be closing the annual WorldPride celebrations in Toronto this summer.

The Calgary natives announced yesterday that they will play a free show to close at the 10 day event, which is expected to be one of Canada’s biggest arts and culture festivals of 2014.

“We attended our first Toronto Pride in 1999,” Tegan Quin said about the announcement.

“Yup, we’re that old! Since then we have had the pleasure of celebrating Pride in Toronto with friends too many times to count. But this year is extra special! It’s WorldPride in Toronto. And we are going to be there. Not just wandering around drinking lemonade and checking out the festivities this time. We’re actually playing this year. We couldn’t be more proud to be involved.”

The Quin twins are still enjoying the success of their 2013 album, Heartthrob which spawned the hit song Closer. This week, they picked up three gongs at the 43rd annual Juno Awards, Canada’s biggest music award ceremony.

Talking about the win, Tegan said, “I want to say thanks to everyone who has supported us from the time we were teenagers. I don’t think very many people, certainly not us, thought two queer kids from northeast Calgary would get to here. And here we are. So thank you very much to each and everyone of you, thank you very much.”

WorldPride 2014 takes place June 20-29, and will include 10 free stages featuring live acts and DJs.
