A woman in the United States tweeted a picture of her son and an elaborate caption in an attempt to vent her frustration with the #MeToo movement. She shared the picture, without her son’s permission, and he inadvertently became the face of an anti-feminist movement. Her tweet backfired on her, however, when as soon as it went viral the memes slagging its message took the internet by storm.
The woman shared the hashtag #HimToo, which was originally used on social media to show support for male victims of sexual assault after Terry Crews and James Van der Beek shared their experiences. The hashtag was then hijacked during the confirmation of alleged abuser Brett Kavanaugh, as his appointment to the Supreme Court was confirmed last week. #HimToo was then propagated on social media by people who maintain that false accusations of sexual assault against men are both common and a threat to men generally.
The woman shared a picture of her son and added the caption:
“This is MY son. He graduated #1 in boot camp. He was awarded the USO award. He was #1 in [Army] school.
“He is a gentleman who respects women. He won’t go on solo dates due to the current climate of false sexual accusations by radical feminists with an axe to grind. I VOTE. #HimToo.”
Pieter Hanson, the son in question, created his own Twitter account after his attention was brought to the picture as it went viral. His phone went crazy with notifications as he took a test at the University of Central Florida.
When he saw the tweet he said:
“It doesn’t represent me at all. I love my mom to death, but boy, I’m still trying to wrap my head around all of this.”
Hanson tweeted to clarify his position on #MeToo:
That was my Mom. Sometimes the people we love do things that hurt us without realizing it. Let’s turn this around. I respect and #BelieveWomen . I never have and never will support #HimToo . I’m a proud Navy vet, Cat Dad and Ally. Also, Twitter, your meme game is on point. pic.twitter.com/yZFkEjyB6L

Indeed, Twitter went wild with memes as soon as the original tweet went viral. Here are some of the best ones so far:
This is my son. He’s #1 in his class at gay bashing and restricting women’s rights. I don’t let him go on solo dates because he can’t be left alone with any woman not named “Mother.” #HimToo pic.twitter.com/H3Dss8wQ0M

This is my son. He was #1 on the charts. He won’t go on solo dates even though he never gave up, let you down, run around, or deserted you, make you cry, say goodbye, tell a lie nor hurt you #HimToo pic.twitter.com/Q5sMpGIVR3

This is MY son. He graduated #1 from the University of Flavortown. He was awarded three banging fajita poppers. He was #1 in flamin' hot crunch. He won't go on solo dates due to the current climate of false accusations of taking the last slice of pizza. I VOTE. #HimToo pic.twitter.com/4DY151a2W7

This is MY son. I made him in a lab. He’s clearly a genius. He learned to read just by hiding near some French people. He probably would have been a gentleman who respects women, but he murdered my whole family because I refused to make him a wife. He doesn’t go on dates. #HimToo pic.twitter.com/BSSZAOkKIe

Indeed, Pieter responded to his mother’s tweet in the best possible way. Moreover, he used his new-found viral fame to urge his followers to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
