There is increasing discussion about hate speech, cyberbullying and the issues associated with the publishing and circulation of hateful content online. But what is hate speech? And what does it mean in an LGBT+ context? Is it a significant issue in our community – and for whom? And what are the appropriate responses? What are Google’s responses? This Thursday, Google will host a panel event centred on the online LGBT+ community from diverse perspectives as part of the company’s Talks At series.
The final Google Talks At session will feature discussions on online hate, cyberbullying and body positivity, as the event organisers encourage the online community at large to “Post! Don’t Roast!”
A host of distinguished panellists from engineering, media and yoga practice backgrounds will be happy to lead the discussion and answer questions regarding the publishing and circulation of hateful content online.
Yoga sensation Finlay Wilson will join HeadStuff author Aoife Martin and vlogger and TV personality Stephen Byrne for the Google Talks At panel. Each speaker will share their own personal experiences with cyberbullying and online hate. The panellists are also happy to answer live questions.
Google has been running the Talks At programme since 2006. The events, which take place worldwide, see the collaboration of the world’s most influential speakers, creators, makers and doers in the same room. Topics range from arts and entertainment to sports, business and leadership. With Lenny Abrahamson, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba, Jessica Chastain and David Beckham among the past speakers, the event has become a staple of Google’s unique culture.
Following the panel discussion, a fabulous cocktail reception awaits all attendees.
This LGBT+ focused event takes place this Thursday, November 15 at Google’s Dublin office on Barrow Street. The panel will run from 2-4pm.
