Three-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan and Oscar winner Kate Winslet are set to portray lesbian lovers in new movie Ammonite, a dramatic love story.
24-year-old Ronan will play a young, wealthy London woman who is sent to live by the sea to help to recuperate from poor health, while Winslet will play Mary Anning, a real-life palaeontologist who was born in Dorset in 1799. The two meet and find themselves in an intense romantic relationship.
The film will be set in the 1840s, according to Deadline, and production is slated to begin in March 2019. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman who was behind movies Lion and Widows will produce the period drama.
Saoirse Ronan recently said she was planning on taking a break from acting after starring in Mary Queen Of Scots, which also features queer themes, alongside Margot Robbie.
The actress had planned on taking most of the year off, according to the Irish Independent. Ronan recently said that while filming Mary Queen Of Scots, she would have to wear skirts she was unable to sit down in as well as uncomfortable corsets every day.
Meanwhile, Winslet just recently finished work on Avatar 2, which proved to be testing with director James Cameron saying that the actress had to hold her breath underwater for seven minutes at a time for some scenes. She is also currently filming the drama Blackbird.
Francis Lee, who recently gave us critically acclaimed LGBT+ movie God’s Own Country, will direct Ammonite, which will be adapted from his original screenplay. Lee tweeted on Saturday, “I’ll be taking a break from Twitter for a while as it looks like I’m making a film. Thank you, everyone, for your incredible support of God’s Own Country and me over the last 2 years. It’s time to make another one. See you soon.”
