This Friday, June 7, the IFI is holding a special screening of  John Butler’s film Papi Chulo. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director John Butler and we have tickets to give away!  To be in with a chance to win, just answer the question below. The winner will be announced on Thursday, June 6 by email.

In Los Angeles, the perfect world of gay TV weatherman Sean (Matt Bomer) is shaken with the end of a significant relationship and a very public on-air meltdown. Forced to take time off, he fills his empty days and his empty house with some hired help in the shape of straight, middle-aged family man Ernesto (Alejandro Patiño). Sean gamely tries to befriend the taciturn Ernesto as he goes about his tasks and gradually, despite wildly different life experience, age, language and cultural differences, a delicate friendship begins to form.

Set against a brightly-hued Californian backdrop filled with tasteful interiors and handsome cast, the film is a pleasure to behold. Writer/director John Butler touches deftly on serious matters – ethnicity, migrant labour, class, loneliness and mental health – in an uplifting comedy that is a paean to the joy and value of male friendship.

Papi Chulo is the third feature film from acclaimed Irish writer/director John Butler (The Stag, Handsome Devil).

Butler’s Handsome Devil was the winner of the Irish TV/Film Award at the 2017 GALAs. The film tackles the issue of homophobic bullying in schools and is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Papi Chulo sees the Irish filmmaker return to the themes of empathy and unlikely friendship, in his first feature shot outside of Ireland, with a host of international stars attached. The film had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and more recently was the Opening Gala at Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival with Hollywood stars Matt Bomer and Alejandro Patiño in attendance.
