RuPaul's Celebrity Drag Race: Here's everything we know so far

RuPaul is serving 'celebri-tea' with the announcement of new spin-off RuPaul's Celebrity Drag Race. Here is everything you need to know.

RuPaul on the main stage, what looks might be brought to RuPaul's Celebrity Drag Race?

RuPaul has announced RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race will be coming to screens in 2020. Though there is still much mystery on how the spin-off will work, this is everything we do know.

Each episode of the spin-off will follow three celebrity guests as they undergo a drag transformation in hopes of winning the title of America’s Next Celebrity Drag Superstar. The prize money will be donated to a charity of the winner’s choosing.

Though the set-up seems self-contained, it will be interesting to see if the winners from each episode will face off in an epic finale. This would not be a first for RuPaul’s Drag Race as the season 6 contestants were split between episodes one and two.

In recent seasons, celebrity guest judges have taken on different looks to go behind the scenes, such as Lady Gaga entering the competition as ‘Ronnie’, but RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race is taking this to the next level.

RuPaul said in a press release, “Doing drag does not change who you are, it reveals who you are. I can’t wait for the world to see what happens when our celebrity contestants get all up in drags!”

The celebrity contestants won’t be competing without assistance as Drag Race alumni will be making a return. Numerous queens from past seasons are confirmed to be tutoring the celebrities in the ways of drag, this includes Alyssa Edwards, Asia O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen, Kim Chi, Monét X Change, Monique Heart, Nina West, Trinity the Tuck, Trixie Mattel, and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo.

It is difficult to gauge whether the queens will be mentoring one celebrity each or will be overseeing an episode between them. However, each queen confirmed brings a different look and talent so it will be interesting to see what celebrities will learn from them. Trixie took to Twitter to say, “This was the most fun I’ve ever had on RPDR!!!”

There is much to be excited about, especially in terms of speculating over who the celebrities will be and seeing the previous queens return, yet reaction to the announcement has been mixed. Fashion and pop culture commentator Ryan Mitchell summarised it nicely, “This is so random but I’m kinda living.”
