German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, believes that “marriage is a man and a woman living together”.

Merkel, the Head of Christian Democratic Union, supported equal benefits for same-sex couples, but believes that gays and lesbians should not have access to full civil marriage.

In an interview with popular German YouTuber LeFloid, Merkel explained her opposition to marriage equality.

“I’m someone who is very supportive of us eliminating all discrimination. We have come a long way; when I remember, 25 years ago, many people didn’t dare to say that they are gay or lesbian,” she said.

“For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living together. That is my concept, but I support civil partnerships.”

Merkel, the staunch Christian who has been married twice, added that she believes that same-sex couples should have access to partnerships and tax breaks. “I am for registered civil partnerships. I am for our not having any discrimination in tax legislation. And wherever we still find discrimination, we will continue to dismantle it.”

She concluded, “I don’t want discrimination and [I want] equality.”
