In an interview with The Guardian, bisexual rapper Azealia Banks defended her use of the word ‘faggot’, in reference to a feud she had with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. This comes after an interview where she used a different definition for the term.
Azealia Banks, who recently released her long awaited debut album, defended her use of the word during an interview and claimed that the word can refer to straight men and gay men who hate women. She stated that she believes that misogyny is rife in the gay community and people will use other derogatory terms but find the term ‘faggot’ offensive.
I don’t regret doing it, but I’ll never do it again, because I don’t care enough about the person to have the battle again and defend my use of the word ‘faggot’… A lot of gay men are way more misogynistic than straight men. The shit they say about women behind their backs, it’s like: ‘Wow, oh my God!’
You can be a straight faggot, you can be a gay faggot. A faggot is anybody that hates women. It’s like, y’all sing along to my words when I’m saying ‘nigga’ and ‘cunt’, but as soon as I call this one white man a faggot the whole world exploded. Listen, I didn’t say all gay men are faggots; I said Perez Hilton is a faggot, so don’t try and bring the rest of the gays down with your faggotry.
Her claims of misogyny can’t really be given much credence as she claimed in an interview earlier this year that a ‘faggot’ also refers to any man who acts like a woman. Banks said that, “a faggot is not a homosexual male. A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There’s a BIG difference.”
For future reference, Azealia, claiming that ‘acting like a woman’ is worthy of the word ‘faggot’ is misogynistic.
