BBC caused a stir by choosing to edit out a homophobic joke from a re-airing of a classic episode of ‘Top of the Pops’.
The iconic BBC chart show went off the air several years ago, we reruns of classic episodes being still aired regularly. In an episode originally aired in 1980, lead singer of The Who Roger Daltrey made a racy joke about gay icons, The Village People, saying “watch your backs” before they came on stage.

In the re-airing, BBC’s decision to edit out the joke was met with a mixed reaction from audiences – with some saying that they were “airbrushing” history.
A BBC spokesperson told PinkNews, “Repeat showings of Top of the Pops are regularly edited for technical, running time or other editorial reasons.”
