Olivia Rodrigo has just released a remix of her hit song, ‘expectations’, which excitedly includes Chappell Roan, marking the artist’s first feature in her career. The original song is from Rodrigo’s latest album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and topped the charts in 17 countries including Ireland.
A music video was released alongside the song, featuring Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan as well as appearances from Talking Heads’ frontman David Byrne, and As Tall as Lions’ Dan Nigro. It was directed by Bardia Zeinali, who is known for his work on Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Please Please Please’ and Conan Grey’s ‘Never Ending Song’.
The video takes inspiration from ’80s and ’90s-era gameshows, with David Byrne as the host on “The Big Expectations Show”, and Rodrigo and Roan playing contestants. Both artists show off multiple incredible (as always) looks, with Rodrigo in pastel pinks and deep shades of black, and Roan in popping mint greens, elegant red dresses and extravagant fur scarves, as well as her signature extravagant makeup.
The catchy love song shows off the signature modern-pop defining style that Rodrigo is known for, blended with Roan’s ‘sing your heart out’ sapphic music heard in tracks like ‘Pink Pony Club’ and ‘The Subway’. If you are as excited as you should be to hear this collab, give it a watch on YouTube below, or listen on any major music streaming platforms. Physical formats are also available for ‘expectations’, with 7” vinyls, CDs, cassettes and related merchandise being available on both artists’ online stores.
Both singers are making new strides in their careers, with Olivia Rodrigo recently wrapping up her women-led music festival Daisy Chain Fields in Irvine, California, which raised $20 million for 10 non-profit organisations advocating for women worldwide. Artists such as Mitski, Stevie Nicks and of course, Chappell Roan were among the headliners.
With the ‘expectations’ remix being Roan’s first-ever feature, it is possible the artist may collaborate with other people in the future (hopefully very soon!). However, outside of music, Roan has set up the Midwest Princess Project which aims at helping LGBTQ+ communities and bolstering support for trans youth.
Both artists have won numerous awards, including Grammys, and have gone platinum multiple times, dominating the music charts for years. The two are arguably the defining artists of pop right now, and this collaboration marks a huge moment for fans worldwide.
