Romeo Beckham will make his official acting debut in the upcoming queer sports drama Forty Love. From the looks of the recently released international trailer, the film promises to be in the same vein as Heated Rivalry, a queer take on the enemies-to-lovers story.

Officially described as a drama set in the world of professional tennis, the film explores the balance between ambition, performance and intimacy on the French Riviera.

The 24-year-old son of David and Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, will star alongside French actor Paul Kircher, best known for his lead role in the 2022 queer French drama Winter Boy.

Kircher plays Sacha Gallo, a rising star in the world of professional tennis. Training for the championships in Paris under a strict programme overseen by his father, Gallo’s world is challenged when he meets a charismatic competitor, played by Beckham.

As the pair grow closer, Gallo begins to question his ambitions on the court and his own identity.

The international trailer features several steamy, suggestive moments, including sweaty tennis matches and an intimate dance scene between Beckham and Kircher on the club floor.

In one moment, Beckham’s character teases Gallo, saying, “It’s the perfect opportunity for us to become more than just enemies.”

This is not the first time we have seen a queer dynamic play out in the world of tennis on the big screen. Forty Love is already being compared to Heated Rivalry, but let’s not forget the highly suggestive queer dynamics in Challengers.

Released in 2024, Challengers saw Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist come to blows both on the tennis court and over Zendaya’s affections. The film dripped with homoerotic undertones between the two leads, with a standout scene involving a three-way make-out session.

While some viewers felt Challengers could have pushed its queer elements further, Forty Love looks set to deliver on those aspects.

Directed by French fashion photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti in his feature directorial debut, the film also stars Guillaume Canet, Catherine Deneuve and Benjamin Voisin. Johan Lenox and LGBTQ+ artist 070 Shake will compose its score.

Forty Love will be released in French cinemas on November 25. Watch Romeo Beckham in the trailer below.
