Charli xcx has announced that she will be matching Chappell Roan’s $25,000 donation to artists who are struggling to afford healthcare. The move follows an op-ed controversy in which the ‘Pink Pony Club’ singer was attacked for her speech at the Grammys.

On Sunday, February 2, Chappell Roan won her very first Grammy, collecting the award for Best New Artist. During her acceptance speech, she called out the music industry and demanded that “labels in the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a liveable wage and health care, especially developing artists.”

Her statements were later criticised by music executive Jeff Rabhan in an op-ed published in The Hollywood Reporter, who wrote that her speech was “noble but also wildly misinformed”. Rabhan also stated that the pop star was “no longer a struggling artist” and should “do something about” the wealth disparity “rather than talk about it”.

Posting a screenshot of the article on social media, Chappell Roan hit back by announcing a $25,000 donation to Backline, a charity that works to support music industry professionals and their families with mental health and wellness resources.

Roan then challenged the music executive, saying: “Mr. Rabhan, I love how in the article you said ‘put your money where your mouth is.’ Genius !!! Let’s link and build together and see if you can do the same.”

“@jeffrabhan wanna match me $25K to donate to struggling dropped artists?” she added. “My publicist is @biz3publicity let’s talk”.

At the time of writing, Jeffrey Rabhan has yet to reply to the pop singer.

Since then, other artists have come out in support of Chappell Roan’s move, announcing on social media that they would match her donation to the cause. Singer-songwriter Noah Kahan was the first to do so, stating: “Hey @chappellroan, I’m going to match your 25K to support artist’s access to healthcare.”

He added, “I’m inspired by you. Happy to help get the ball rolling. Money where (my) mouth is!”

Charli xcx followed suit on Saturday night when she took to her Instagram stories to announce: “hey @chappellroan i am going to match your 25k to support artists’ access to healthcare.

“i saw @noahkahanmusic say that he would do the same and so i thought i’d follow suit,” she wrote. “Your speech at the grammys was inspiring and thoughtful and from a genuine place of care. happy to help get the ball rolling too. money where mouth is xx (sic).”

In addition to calling out the music industry, Chappell Roan also spoke about the situation trans people are currently facing in the US following Trump’s return to the White House. Ahead of the Grammys ceremony, she spoke to GLAAD’s Chrishell Stause and Anthony Allen Ramos, saying: “Trans people have always existed and they will forever exist, and they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away.

“I would not be here without trans girls, so just know that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you, and I’m trying my best to stand up for you in every way that I can.”
