Club Gass Support
Teach Solais, Galway’s newest LGBT+ resource centre, launched in December last year and has worked to provide the local LGBT+ community with incredible services.
In a press release for the upcoming fundraiser, Amach! LGBT Chairperson Maria Molloy highlighted the importance of creating connections like the relationship with Club Gass to help sustain the service.
She also discussed what the resource centre has been able to accomplish in just under a year and upcoming plans which include introducing an LGBT+ migrant program:
“Teach Solais, Galway and the West’s first ever LGBT+ resource centre opened its doors in early 2017 and it has gone from strength to strength offering a vast array of much-needed services and events for the LGBT+ community in the city and surrounding area.
To date we have a variety of groups using our centre such as the community based mental health peer support charity Cosáin, the LGBT Helpline, AIDS West rapid HIV testing and many peer support groups for the LGBT+ community. In addition to this, we have developed a strong collaborative relationship with An áit eile, a local arts and cultural collective who aim to promote health and wellbeing within the community through cultural events as a conduit to positive mental health.
Current and planned social activities taking place in the centre include meditation sessions, book clubs, yoga, photography classes, integration choir, film nights/panel discussions, arts and crafts courses and Silver rainbows older LGBT intergenerational project. We are currently commencing a yearlong LGBT migrant project to promote awareness of the services on offer at the centre and to actively engage those in direct provision and integrate them into the wider LGBT+ community.
It has been such a busy few months with many people from the LGBT+ and wider community utilising the many services provided. We see Teach Solais as a community centre with a strong ethos on health and well being, there for people who need peer support or social activities to make new friends.
We also wish to make connections with other community groups and other LGBT+ organisations. Club GASS has always been a keen supporter and promoter of Teach Solais and we hope to continue this great relationship in the future. Such events like that of Club GASS fundraising for Teach Solais, means that this vital service remains open to our community and will be sustained with their support.”
