Cynthia Erivo makes Golden Globes history with second lead actress nomination

Erivo's distinguised performance as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good earned her a nomination in the leading actress (comedy or musical) category for the second year in a row.

The highly-anticipated release of Jon M. Chu’s musical sequel Wicked: For Good  left fans changed for the better. The performances of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are making waves during this awards season, especially at the Golden Globes.

Announced on December 8, Cynthia Erivo made history as the first Black woman to be nominated for lead actress (comedy or musical) twice at the Golden Globes. Erivo shared an Instagram story acknowledging the news and congratulating Grande for her nomination for best supporting actress.

“It has been a beautiful journey to play this character,” Erivo wrote. “And this is just the cherry on top.”

Prior to Erivo’s nomination, only twelve Black women had been nominated for comedy lead actress in the Golden Globes’ history. Winning the category for her performance as Tina Turner in the 1994 biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It, Angela Bassett became the first and only Black woman to take home the award.

Erivo shares her appreciation for the repeat nomination at the Golden Globes, while thanking director Jon M. Chu and congratulation costar Ariana Grande.

Last year at the Golden Globes, Erivo lost to Demi Moore for her role as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance. Wicked, which grossed over $750 million worldwide, won the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

The nominees this year are Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Song Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).

Erivo did not receive a nomination from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Actress this year, which quickly sparked speculation that she is being snubbed this awards season. Her Golden Globes nomination has settled the nerves of some fans.

Wicked: For Good has received slightly less critical praise than Wicked, but has still been a massive success at the box office. The film has grossed over $400 million worldwide.

Cynthia Erivo’s repeat nomination at the Golden Globes has only added to the historical achievements of the Wicked franchise. A gravity-defying performer and actress, we’re positive we’ll see Erivo back on the big screen very soon.
