Spring is blooming all around us, which means that Pride season is just around the corner. As we get ready for another year of celebrating and protesting, Dublin Pride has announced the theme for the landmark 2025 festival.

This year marks two crucial anniversaries in Ireland. Ten years ago, Ireland became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote after we won the referendum. In addition to that milestone moment, 2015 was also the year when the Gender Recognition Act was passed, as well as the Children and Family Relationships Act.

After years of fighting, protesting and advocating for our rights, these three achievements represented vital victories for the entire community in Ireland. However, the fight for liberation hasn’t stopped there, and those hard-won liberties cannot be taken for granted.

Dublin Pride highlights this important message with the theme of the 2025 festival: “Taking liberties”. Quoting civil rights activist Philip Randolph, organisers stated: “Freedom is never granted; it is won. Justice is never given; it is exacted.”

In the official statement announcing the theme, Dublin Pride said: “We look back at the liberties we have taken, not just to celebrate them, but to remind ourselves how hard we fought to take them – and how hard we must be willing to fight to stop anyone from taking those liberties away.”

As we witness the rollback of trans rights in the US and increasing hate and violence against members of the community, now more than ever, it is vital to remind ourselves why we march in Pride every year.

“Taking liberties is what we do – and will continue to do,” the statement further reads. “We invite you to join us this June as we march in solidarity with our entire global LGBTQ+ family and send a clear message to the world: The liberties we have taken will not be taken back.”

Commenting on this year’s theme, Dublin Pride Co-CEO Jamie Kenny said: “Pride has always been about taking liberties—demanding our rights, claiming our space, and refusing to be pushed back into the shadows.

“As we mark ten years since key victories for LGBTQ+ rights in Ireland, we celebrate how far we’ve come while recognising the urgent need to defend those hard-won freedoms. Around the world, and even here at home, we see attempts to roll back progress, particularly against our trans and non-binary family.

“This year, our vibrant and diverse community will be united in making it clear: the liberties we have taken will not be taken back. We invite everyone to stand with us, march with us, and raise their voices in solidarity.”
