We know there are a lot of Eurovision fanatics out there who were understandably worried about Ryan O’Shaughnessy getting out of the qualifiers, but we wonder were there many who were quite as…vocal as superfan Martin Jones.
In hilarious footage captured by one of his friends (who suspiciously seemed to be enjoying the torture Martin was going through), Martin watches the announcement of the countries who qualified for the live final on Saturday. Martin goes through a range of emotions from frustration and annoyance to… well, he was frustrated and annoyed for quite a while! “We’re going home, we’re going home, forget it now, lads”, he sighs, barely able to stay in his seat.
There’s an inkling of hope…but it doesn’t last for long, as Martin complains, “We may as well give this thing up, because we’re never going to qualify again.” He is of course referring to Ireland’s failure to advance from the qualifiers over the last 5 years. Sorry to rub it in, Martin!
As we all know, in a move that could have come straight from a movie, anticipation builds, hope fades, until Ireland is called out as the very last country on the list to move forward. That’s when Martin goes nuclear. “We’re in it! We’re in the final!” he screams, expressing what people were feeling up and down the country. Well done, Martin!
If you want to cheer Ryan on at the campest Euro celebration Ireland has to offer, get yourself down to GCN’s very own Eurovision Douze Points Party in The Sugar Club this Saturday. Apart from the Song contest itself, there are loads of spot prizes, games and special guests organised also.
There’s still a handful of tickets left for the event which you can grab here. So come on and give superfan Martin a run for his money in the cheering stakes!
