The LGBT+ activist group Gays Against Guns have released a trailer for a new movie currently in production which depicts their ongoing battle against lax gun laws in the United States.
The film, due to be released next year, follows Gays Against Guns as they “invade rural gun shows in drag, protest NRA puppet politicians, and create their haunting processions of white-veiled ‘Human Beings’ representing gun violence victims. It’s a veritable how-to of queer activism and resistance under a virulent homophobic regime.”
The description continues that the election of Trump “made them stronger and more razor focused in their mission to break the gun industry’s chain of death, and the bigotry that feeds it.”
Gays Against Guns “is an inclusive direct action group of LGBTQ people and their allies committed to nonviolently breaking the gun industry’s chain of death—investors, manufacturers, the NRA and politicians who block safer gun laws.”
One of the activists featured in the trailer says, “We were interested in gun violence prevention not just for LGBTQ people – for everyone. We wanted to make sure that the entire country was safe, not just us.”
Another activist describes Gays Against Guns as “this wide broadband intersectional movement that crosses every possible line you can imagine. Another describes how they used their gayness as “part of our armour to show everyone who we are”, “we are getting people riled up, we are catching their eye.”
Another member featured insists “I refuse to accept this as the kind of world I’m going to leave behind for my son.”
The issue of gun violence in America has long been a constant, with campaigners frustrated over the grip the NRA has over a government who continue to do as little as possible to stem attacks, instead offering ‘thoughts and prayers‘. 42% of all civilian owned guns worldwide are within in the United States, despite their being less than 5% of the global population. Last year over 11,000 people died of a gun related homicide in the US.
