Surely no one would be happy about going back to school in August, right? But what if we told you that the school in question was Truham Grammar School, where Season 2 of the absolutely adorable TV show Heartstopper is set? That’s right, Netflix has just announced the release date for the highly-anticipated second season of the rom-com series and we simply cannot wait.
Praised for its focus on queer joy, love and acceptance, the show is based on Alice Oseman’s young adult graphic novel of the same name and it gained millions of fans around the world when it first launched last year.
The series explores the blossoming romantic relationship between two high schoolers, Charlie and Nick, and portrays them on their journey of self-discovery. The first season received such rave reviews that the series was renewed for two additional seasons.
On April 24, fans of the series were treated to a heartwarming announcement video with the cast, who revealed that the eight-episode Season 2 of Heartstopper will drop on August 3 this year. The announcement came shortly after Netflix released a surprise video for the show’s one-year anniversary on April 22.

Now that we have an official date to mark on our calendars, the question is: what can we expect from Season 2? According to the official synopsis, Nick and Charlie will continue to navigate their new relationship after having agreed to make things official in the last episode of the previous season.
Moreover, other storylines will be equally important, like the one that follows fan-fave lesbian couple Tara and Darcy, who will face “unforseen challenges”, or the one that explores Tao and Elle’s evolving relationship as they try to understand if they can ever be more than “just friends”.
“With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship,” the synopsis reads.

Season 2 of Heartstopper will be largely based on volume three of the graphic novel but, as author Alice Oseman explained, while the comics are a “good foundation” for the Netflix series, there wasn’t enough material for a whole season of TV, “so there had to be a lot of creation of new stuff”. This means that even readers of the graphic novels are in for loads of surprises!
Now that you know when Season 2 is coming, the only things that are left to do are to start planning a Season 1 re-watch and mentally prepare for the new one because, in the words of actor Yasmin Finney who plays trans teen Elle in the series, “there’s just so many things in this season that you’re not ready for”!
