Inishowen will debut its first Pride parade this year, led by a diverse group of locals all committed to the core values of inclusion, equality and community spirit.
“We are excited to announce that Buncrana will host Donegal’s first Pride parade on Sunday 5th June 2022, at 3PM,” said Jen McCarron, Inishowen Pride committee member and spokesperson. “The whole community is invited to get involved, show their support and join us for what will be an exciting, fun and uplifting day.”
This Pride event came to fruition when the locals observed a common commitment to celebrating Pride in the month of June 2021, as rainbow flags and bunting descended upon the Donegal town of Buncrana. From there, a voluntary community group was born, spearheading the upcoming parade.
“This will be a fun and family-friendly event that will celebrate the diversity of our community,” McCarron said. “The event presents an opportunity to recognise the progress that has been made to treat all community members equally and ensure that everyone feels like they belong.”
“This is an important time for the wider community to show support,” McCarron continued, referring to recent homophobic attacks and distressing events that have taken place in Ireland. “Our young people should no longer have to question their value in the same way LGBTQ+ people did in the past. Celebrations like this are a sign of hope for everyone but are especially important for the LGBTQ+ young people in our community.”
“I fully support and welcome this initiative and am very proud that plans are in place for the first Pride parade to take place in Buncrana,” added Cllr Jack Murray, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council. “I have no doubt that it will be a big success with such a great team driving this forward. Inishowen is a forward-thinking, welcoming and diverse place, and while it is timely, events like this are not before its time!”
